Summary

Calcium phosphate ceramics can induce bone formation, challenging traditional views. Lamellar bone formation, even without significant mechanical loads, suggests gravity may influence bone structure.

Area of Science:

  • Biomaterials Science
  • Skeletal Biology
  • Orthopedic Research

Background:

  • Calcium phosphate ceramics are not traditionally considered osteoinductive.
  • Pulmonary alveolar microlithiasis and implanted coral granules offer insights into bone formation.
  • The role of mechanical loads in lamellar bone formation is debated.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the osteoinductive and osteoconductive properties of calcium phosphate ceramics.
  • To explore the relationship between lamellar bone formation and mechanical loading.
  • To examine the influence of gravity on bone lamellae orientation.

Main Methods:

  • Histologic, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and X-ray microanalyses of biopsies.
  • Analysis of in vitro experiments on coral granules.
  • Examination of bone surrounding uncemented titanium hip prostheses.
  • Polarized light microscopy of cortical bone sections.

Main Results:

  • Ectopic lamellar bone formation observed on microliths undergoing osteoclastic erosion.
  • SEM and X-ray analyses confirmed osteoconductive properties of calcium and phosphorus in coral granules.
  • Lamellar bone formed in low-load environments, challenging load-dependent theories.
  • Bone lamellae orientation varied, with some oriented orthogonal to primary loads and parallel to surfaces.

Conclusions:

  • Calcium phosphate ceramics may possess osteoinductive properties.
  • Lamellar bone formation may not solely depend on mechanical loads.
  • A potential relationship exists between lamellar bone formation and gravitational forces.
