  • To explore the cognitive and emotional responses of baccalaureate nursing students during their final clinical experience.

  • Thirty-two senior nursing students participated in a 6-week study.
  • Weekly "thinking-in-action" reflections were collected and analyzed using qualitative methods.

Main Results:

  • Seven emergent themes included: awareness of human vulnerability, the weight of registered nurse (RN) responsibility, recognizing personal limits, self-evaluation, patient/family perspectives, ethical dilemmas, and reality versus expectations.
