Abstract:
The challenge of chronic pulmonary disease in children with neurodisability is presented for the primary care physician. Physical assessment and diagnostic tests for evaluation of chronic lung disease are reviewed. Specific respiratory management plans for these children are designed to stabilize chronic pulmonary disease and prevent acute illness with goals of maintaining family routine and stress reduction of every day living. Management and therapy options for mechanical ventilatory support due to eminent ventilatory failure are presented.

The nurse must practice strict medical asepsis and adhere to infection control guidelines to minimize healthcare-associated infections.
Enhance airway patency
Position the patient correctly to facilitate drainage of the affected lung segments. Manual or mechanical percussion and vibration can also be employed.
