Home mechanical ventilators (HMV) are used for chronic respiratory failure in Ireland. However, patient follow-up procedures are inadequate, with over-reliance on equipment suppliers for support.

Area of Science:

  • Pulmonary Medicine
  • Medical Technology

Background:

  • Chronic respiratory failure management is evolving.
  • Home mechanical ventilation (HMV) offers a therapeutic option.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the role and current practices of HMV in the Irish Republic.
  • To identify challenges in HMV patient management.

Main Methods:

  • A national postal survey of centers prescribing HMV was conducted.
  • Data collected on patient demographics, indications, investigations, and follow-up.
  • Survey related to patient status as of July 1st, 2001.

Main Results:

  • 14 centers identified prescribing HMV to 157 patients.
  • Most patients (61%) were aged 25-65, with lung diseases being the primary indication (41%).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Pressure-cycled ventilators were predominantly used (95%), but follow-up procedures were inadequate.
  • Conclusions:

    • Significant reliance on HMV for chronic respiratory failure in Ireland.
    • Current follow-up protocols for HMV patients require improvement.
    • Reduced dependence on equipment suppliers for patient support is recommended.
