Summary

Systemic lupus erythematosus patients exhibit cognitive deficits, particularly in verbal memory and psychomotor speed. These impairments correlate with neuropsychiatric symptoms but not antiphospholipid antibodies.

Background:

  • Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease affecting multiple organs.
  • Neuropsychiatric symptoms are common in SLE and linked to cognitive dysfunction.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate cognitive function in SLE patients.
  • To explore the relationship between cognitive deficits, neuropsychiatric symptoms, and antiphospholipid antibodies in SLE.

Main Methods:

  • 21 SLE patients and 17 healthy controls underwent cognitive testing (verbal/non-verbal reasoning, memory, attention, psychomotor speed, frontal lobe function).
  • SLE patients were also tested for antiphospholipid antibodies.

Main Results:

  • SLE patients showed poorer performance in verbal memory and slower psychomotor speed compared to controls.
