We confirm a novel metallic phase in the one-dimensional Hubbard-Holstein model. This phase exhibits superconducting correlations, existing between the previously known Peierls and Mott phases.
Area of Science:
- Condensed Matter Physics
- Quantum Many-Body Systems
- Materials Science
Background:
- The Hubbard-Holstein model describes interacting electrons and quantum phonons in one dimension.
- Previous studies focused on Peierls or Mott phases at half filling.
- Speculation existed regarding an intermediate metallic phase.
Purpose of the Study:
- To numerically investigate the Hubbard-Holstein model at half filling with finite-frequency quantum phonons.
- To identify and characterize potential new phases.
- To explore the phase diagram across varying interaction parameters.
Main Methods:
- Numerical study of the one-dimensional Hubbard-Holstein model.
- Inclusion of finite-frequency quantum phonons.
- Analysis of electron-phonon and electron-electron interactions.
Main Results:
- Confirmation of an intermediate metallic phase between Peierls and Mott states.
- Demonstration of Luttinger liquid correlation exponent K(rho) >1 in this phase.
- Identification of dominant superconducting pair correlations in the intermediate phase.
Conclusions:
- The Hubbard-Holstein model hosts a third metallic phase at half filling.
- This phase is characterized by strong superconducting pair correlations.
- The study expands understanding of interacting quantum systems and phase diagrams.
