Summary

Retiform perineurioma, a rare benign soft tissue tumor, can exhibit superficial skeletal muscle invasion. This histologic feature may lead to misdiagnosis as a malignant perineurioma.

Background:

  • Retiform perineurioma is a rare, benign histologic subtype of soft tissue perineurioma.
  • Perineuriomas are neoplasms arising from perineurial cells, typically found in peripheral nerves.

Observation:

  • A case of retiform perineurioma in a 34-year-old woman is presented.
  • The neoplasm was located between the deltoid and biceps muscles.
  • Histologic examination revealed a nonencapsulated tumor composed of perineurial cells without atypia.

Findings:

  • The tumor showed focal infiltration into adjacent skeletal muscle, separating muscle bundles.
  • No cytologic or tissue atypia was observed in the neoplastic cells.
