Summary

Post-operative anemia shows significant hemoglobin recovery by day 28, but iron deficiency can delay full recovery. Quality of life measures did not correlate with hemoglobin levels in hip arthroplasty patients.

Background:

  • Modern surgical practices, including lower transfusion thresholds and shorter hospital stays, lead to patients having lower postoperative hemoglobin (Hb) levels.
  • Postoperative anemia is a common complication following major surgeries like hip arthroplasty.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the hematological recovery from postoperative anemia.
  • To assess the impact of anemia on patient quality of life (QoL) using QoL measures.
  • To determine the utility of QoL measures in assessing the impact of anemia in postoperative patients.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective observational study involving 30 patients undergoing unilateral hip arthroplasty.
  • Blood samples and Quality of Life (QoL) questionnaires were collected pre-operatively and at 7, 28, and 56 days post-operatively.

    • Substantial hemoglobin recovery occurs between postoperative days 7 and 28.
    • Delayed complete Hb recovery beyond day 56 can occur due to iron deficiency, influenced by operative blood loss and iron stores.
    • Increased red cell 2,3DPG may mitigate the effects of anemia on oxygen delivery.
    • The chosen QoL measures did not demonstrate a measurable impact of anemia on patients in the postoperative phase.
