Summary

The diffusion capacity of the lung for nitric oxide (DLNO) is unaffected by hemoglobin (Hb) levels. This study found no change in DLNO after red blood cell transfusions, unlike the diffusion capacity for carbon monoxide (DLCO).

Background:

  • Diffusion capacity of the lung for nitric oxide (DLNO) is theorized to better represent alveolocapillary membrane properties than DLCO.
  • This is attributed to nitric oxide's (NO) stronger binding affinity with hemoglobin (Hb).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of hemoglobin concentration on DLNO.
  • To compare DLNO response to changes in Hb with DLCO response.

Main Methods:

  • Single-breath method used to measure DLNO and DLCO.
  • Measurements were taken in 10 anemic patients before and after red cell transfusion.

Main Results:

  • Hemoglobin concentration increased by a mean of 2.6 g/dl.
  • DLCO increased significantly (122%), aligning with predicted values.

  • DLNO showed no significant change (103% post-transfusion), despite the increase in Hb.
  • Conclusions:

    • DLNO is independent of hemoglobin concentration.
