Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Esophageal squamous papillomatosis is a rare condition.
  • It is associated with gastroesophageal reflux and recurrent respiratory papillomatosis.
  • The etiology, natural course, and management remain poorly understood.

Observation:

  • A case of extensive esophageal papillomatosis without airway involvement is presented.
  • The patient experienced a slowly progressive course with strictures.
  • The condition ultimately led to fatal squamous cell carcinoma.

Findings:

  • In-situ hybridization was negative for high-risk human papilloma virus types.
  • The clinical course varied, with potential for spontaneous regression or malignant transformation.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Surveillance for malignancy using endoscopic biopsies or CT scans showed low sensitivity.
  • Implications:

    • This case underscores the diagnostic and management challenges of esophageal squamous papillomatosis.
    • Establishing a definitive etiology can be difficult.
    • Further research is needed to understand the disease and optimize patient care.
