Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Endocrinology

Background:

  • Hyperthyroidism frequently causes neurological symptoms like irritability and hyperkinesia.
  • Chorea and choreoathetosis are uncommon manifestations of thyrotoxicosis.

Observation:

  • This study details a young female patient whose primary symptom of thyrotoxicosis was chorea.
  • The choreiform movements resolved as her thyroid levels normalized.

Findings:

  • Thyrotoxicosis can present with chorea as the predominant sign.
  • Normalization of thyroid function leads to the resolution of chorea.

Implications:

  • Hyperthyroidism should be considered in the differential diagnosis of choreiform movement disorders.
  • Thyroid function tests are recommended for patients presenting with chorea.
