Bee sting therapy for multiple sclerosis (MS) did not reduce disease activity or improve disability. This study found no benefits, despite bee venom being well-tolerated in patients with relapsing MS.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of bee sting therapy in reducing disease activity in multiple sclerosis.
  • To assess the impact of bee sting therapy on disability, fatigue, and quality of life in MS patients.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized, crossover study involving 26 patients with relapsing-remitting or secondary progressive MS.
  • Patients received medically supervised bee sting therapy (live bees, up to 20) or no treatment for 24 weeks.

  • Outcomes included MRI-assessed disease activity (gadolinium-enhancing lesions, T2*-weighted lesion load), relapse rates, disability, fatigue, and quality of life.

    • Bee venom treatment for relapsing multiple sclerosis did not demonstrate efficacy in reducing disease activity.
    • The therapy did not lead to improvements in disability, fatigue, or quality of life for MS patients.
    • While safe, bee sting therapy lacks clinical support for treating multiple sclerosis based on this trial.
