Summary

Cytotoxic T lymphocytes recognize tissue autoantigens, playing a key role in organ-specific autoimmune diseases. Understanding their activation mechanisms offers new avenues for targeted immunologic therapies.

Background:

The role of cytotoxic T lymphocytes in organ-specific autoimmune diseases has been underestimated.
Advances in human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class I-binding peptides have enabled the identification of autoreactive CD8(+) cytotoxic T lymphocytes.

Purpose of the Study:

To review recent studies on the involvement of cytotoxic T lymphocytes in autoimmune disorders.
To discuss the mechanisms underlying the stimulation of autoreactive cytotoxic T lymphocytes.
