Background:
- Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is a severe neurological complication of measles virus (MV) infection.
- MV-associated immunosuppression is implicated in SSPE pathogenesis, potentially due to cytokine dysregulation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate cytokine and chemokine profiles in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum of SSPE patients.
- To elucidate the role of immune mediators in MV-induced immunosuppression and SSPE pathogenesis.

- Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to quantify 11 cytokines and chemokines in CSF and serum.
- Patient cohorts included 60 SSPE cases, 36 infectious/inflammatory neurological disease (IN) cases, and 28 non-inflammatory neurological disease (NIN) cases.

- Elevated levels of IL-12 p70+p40 and IL-10 were observed in SSPE patients' CSF and serum compared to the NIN group.
- Significantly higher CXCL10 levels were found in SSPE CSF, while CXCL8 was elevated in SSPE serum compared to NIN.
- No significant differences were detected for IFN-gamma, IFN-alpha, IL-17, IL-18, IL-4, CCL2, or CCL5 between groups.
Conclusions:
- The findings suggest impaired immune responses against MV in SSPE, despite the presence of some T cell/Th1-inducing stimuli.
- Specific cytokine and chemokine alterations in SSPE indicate a complex immune dysregulation contributing to disease pathogenesis.
