Background:

  • The biomechanical and physiological effects of stroller running are not fully understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of pushing a jogging stroller on biomechanical and physiological variables during running.
  • To test the hypothesis that stroller running shortens stride length and increases physiological exercise indices.
  • To assess the potential association between stroller use and orthopedic injury risk.

Main Methods:

  • A repeated measures design was employed with 10 participants (5 males, 5 females).

  • Participants completed graded exercise tests and two 30-minute field tests on a track: one running without a stroller and one with a stroller at 75% VO2max.
  • Evaluated measures included oxygen consumption (VO2), stride length, heart rate, lactate concentration, ventilation, and rating of perceived exertion (RPE).

    • No significant differences were observed in VO2 or stride length between running with and without a stroller.
    • Heart rate, lactate concentration, ventilation, and RPE significantly increased from 10 to 30 minutes while running with the stroller.
    • These physiological indices were significantly higher after 30 minutes of running with the stroller compared to running without it.

    Conclusions:

    • Pushing a jogging stroller elevates exercise intensity but does not alter gait mechanics (stride length).
    • The findings do not support an increased risk of orthopedic injury associated with stroller running.
    • Further research is recommended to examine these effects at lower exercise intensities typical for recreational runners.
