Summary

This study classified anterior open bites into four types using individualized cephalometric norms. Skeletal open bites were more common than dental open bites, with distinct craniofacial patterns observed.

Area of Science:

  • Orthodontics and Dental Anthropology
  • Cephalometric Analysis

Background:

  • Anterior open bite presents a complex diagnostic challenge.
  • Standard cephalometric norms may not accurately reflect individual patient variations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe cephalometric characteristics of anterior open bites.
  • To classify open bites using individualized cephalometric norms.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of lateral cephalograms from 134 anterior open bite patients.
  • Classification based on jaw inclination using individualized norms (Hasund's harmony box).
  • Categorization into dental, skeletal (enlarged/reduced ML-NSL angle), and jaw deviation subtypes.

Main Results:

  • 66.4% skeletal open bites (89 patients), 33.6% dental open bites (45 patients).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Significant differences in facial height index, facial height ratio, gonial angle, and Y-axis among the four groups.
  • No significant differences in overbite between groups.
  • Conclusions:

    • Individualized norms effectively classify anterior open bites into four statistically supported subtypes.
    • The classification provides a framework for understanding craniofacial patterns in open bite patients.
    • The severity of open bite alone does not determine the craniofacial pattern.
