Summary

Cyanotic congenital heart disease is commonly linked to hypertrophic osteoarthropathy (HOA). Skeletal changes in cardiogenic HOA are more severe and persistent than in other internal illnesses.

Background:

Previously, hypertrophic osteoarthropathy (HOA) was considered rare in cyanotic congenital heart disease (CCHD).
Emerging evidence suggests a significant association between CCHD and HOA.

Purpose of the Study:

To discuss the clinical features of cardiogenic HOA.
To highlight the prevalence and severity of HOA in CCHD patients.

Main Methods:

Review of recent prospective studies on CCHD and HOA.
Analysis of clinical features and skeletal changes in affected patients.

Main Results:

Over one-third of patients with CCHD exhibit HOA.
Skeletal manifestations of cardiogenic HOA are more prevalent, persistent, and severe compared to HOA from other internal diseases.

Conclusions:

The association between CCHD and HOA is more common than previously thought.
Cardiogenic HOA presents distinct and severe skeletal changes that warrant clinical attention.
