Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Dentistry
  • Public Health Dentistry
  • Caries Prevention

Background:

  • Long-term application of 0.2% neutral sodium fluoride rinses in school children.
  • Previous decade of fortnightly fluoride rinse programs in a Danish municipality.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the clinical effectiveness of continued fortnightly school-based fluoride (sodium fluoride) mouth rinses.
  • To compare caries increment between fluoride rinses and placebo (distilled water) rinses in children.

Main Methods:

  • Randomized controlled trial involving 1306 children (kindergarten to 6th grade) over 3 years.
  • Stratified randomization by school and grade, with two groups: fluoride rinse and water rinse.
  • Clinical caries assessment by municipal dentists and radiographic assessment by researchers.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • No statistically significant difference in clinical caries increment between fluoride and water rinse groups.
  • Radiographic analysis revealed a statistically significant higher caries progression in the water group compared to the fluoride group for newly erupted surfaces.
  • DMFS (Decayed, Missing, or Filled Surfaces) primarily involved pits and fissures (94%).

Conclusions:

  • Continued school-based fluoride mouth rinses did not demonstrate a significant clinical benefit in reducing caries increment over a 3-year period.
  • Radiographic evidence suggests a potential benefit of fluoride rinses in preventing caries on newly erupted permanent tooth surfaces.
  • The findings highlight the importance of diagnostic methods (clinical vs. radiographic) in evaluating caries prevention efficacy.
