Summary

Lymphocytic hypophysitis (LH) is a rare inflammatory condition often mistaken for pituitary adenomas. Recognizing specific MRI features, like cystic lesions with ring enhancement, can aid in its preoperative diagnosis.

Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Radiology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Lymphocytic hypophysitis (LH) is an uncommon primary inflammatory disorder of the pituitary gland.
  • It is frequently diagnosed post-operatively after surgical resection of presumed pituitary adenomas.
  • Preoperative diagnosis remains challenging, though certain radiological findings have been suggested.

Observation:

  • This report details a case of LH presenting with specific Magnetic Resonance (MR) imaging characteristics.
  • The observed MR imaging finding was a cystic lesion exhibiting ring contrast enhancement.
  • This imaging pattern, while not previously emphasized, was noted in the described patient.

Findings:

  • The study highlights that cystic lesions with ring enhancement are a potential imaging feature of lymphocytic hypophysitis.

Related Experiment Videos

  • This specific radiological appearance may not be as rare as initially thought.
  • The findings suggest a need to include this presentation in the differential diagnosis of pituitary lesions.
  • Implications:

    • Accurate preoperative diagnosis of LH can prevent unnecessary surgery and guide appropriate treatment.
    • Incorporating these MR imaging findings into diagnostic criteria may improve early identification of LH.
    • Further research into the spectrum of radiological findings in LH is warranted to refine diagnostic strategies.
