Dealing with STD goes beyond the simple notion of "disease" and implies for the doctor to pay attention to the possible consequences on his patients' sexuality and couple relationship. Indeed, feelings of shame, culpability, fear in the present context of the AIDS epidemic can develop very fast as well as suspicion and loss of trust considering the problem of transmission. Couple's crisis and sexual problems could result from it. One of the most important elements of STD prevention, in particular AIDS is communication around sexuality. The doctor's role is very important as a mediator, he has to treat the dimensions of Safer Sex and use of condoms taking into account the individual needs (and not only the technical aspects) because the sexologic material does not uncover by itself.
