Background:

  • Theoretical, experimental, and simulation studies suggest a transient period of surface enrichment in binary polymer blends.
  • Understanding early-stage surface compositional changes is crucial for controlling blend properties.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the early-stage surface compositional enrichment in a phase-separating polymer blend.
  • To characterize the dynamics and stages of surface enrichment using high-resolution techniques.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized neutron reflectivity for its high depth resolution.
  • Investigated polymer dynamics near the glass transition temperature.
  • Studied a phase-separating binary polymer blend.

Main Results:

  • Observed two distinct stages of surface enrichment layer growth.
  • Identified a rapid initial surface enrichment at the chain segmental level.
  • Characterized a subsequent slower growth of a diffuse layer.

Conclusions:

  • The study provides the first experimental evidence of two stages in early-stage surface enrichment of polymer blends.
  • The observed stages involve segmental-level mixing followed by larger-scale diffuse layer formation.
  • Findings contribute to understanding surface phenomena in phase-separating polymer systems.
