Summary

Resonant phenomena in driven systems with integral constraints occur away from fundamental frequencies. These constrained resonances depend on intrinsic properties of the undriven system, modifying Taylor relaxation in toroidal plasmas.

Area of Science:

  • Plasma physics
  • Magnetohydrodynamics
  • Nonlinear dynamics

Background:

  • Linear driven systems with integral constraints can exhibit resonance.
  • Taylor relaxation is a key concept in understanding magnetized toroidal plasmas.
  • Understanding resonance in constrained systems is crucial for plasma confinement and stability.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate resonant phenomena in linear driven systems with integral constraints.
  • To analyze the frequency and mode structure of these constrained resonances.
  • To explore the implications for Taylor relaxation in toroidal plasmas.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of a linear driven problem with integral constraints.
  • Application to a Taylor-relaxed magnetized plasma in a torus.
  • Investigation of systems conserving net toroidal flux.

Main Results:

  • Resonant phenomena persist but occur away from fundamental frequencies.
  • Constrained resonance frequency and mode structure are intrinsic properties of the undriven system.
  • Modifications to the standard Taylor relaxation paradigm in toroidal plasmas are identified.

Conclusions:

  • Integral constraints shift resonance frequencies in driven systems.
  • Intrinsic properties of the undriven system dictate constrained resonance characteristics.
  • The study reveals novel aspects of Taylor relaxation in constrained toroidal plasmas.
