Area of Science:

  • Addiction Medicine
  • Psychiatry
  • Public Health

Context:

  • Drug addiction treatment is complex, with ongoing debate regarding optimal approaches.
  • Self-help programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) offer a potential supplement to conventional treatment.
  • Systematic cooperation between Norwegian treatment facilities and these self-help groups is currently limited.

Purpose:

  • To investigate the association between participation in self-help groups and abstinence rates.
  • To determine if self-help group involvement correlates with sustained recovery two years post-treatment.

Summary:

  • A study followed 114 patients (alcohol and drug addiction) who initiated self-help groups post-treatment.
  • Two years later, regular self-help participants showed significantly higher abstinence rates (81%) compared to non-participants (26%).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Logistic regression indicated a strong association between participation and abstinence (OR=12.6, p<0.001).
  • Impact:

    • Despite methodological limitations, the findings suggest a strong probability of positive effects from self-help group participation.
    • The study supports recommending self-help groups as a complementary strategy within addiction treatment frameworks.
    • This research highlights the potential value of integrating peer support into formal addiction recovery pathways.
