Area of Science:

  • Neuro-oncology
  • Neurosurgery
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Dural metastasis is a rare complication of systemic cancer.
  • Breast cancer can metastasize to the dura, leading to serious neurological complications.
  • Acute subdural hematoma is a critical neurosurgical emergency.

Observation:

  • A 56-year-old female with a history of breast cancer metastatic to bone and lung presented with acute subdural hematoma.
  • The subdural hematoma was associated with dural metastasis.
  • The patient had multiple metastatic tumors.

Findings:

  • Surgical evacuation of the hematoma combined with local tumor management and control of bleeding led to neurological improvement.
  • Postoperative radiotherapy was administered.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The clinical outcome was influenced by the patient's general condition and coagulation status.
  • Implications:

    • This case underscores the association between dural metastasis (particularly from adenocarcinoma) and subdural hematoma.
    • Management requires a multidisciplinary approach involving neurosurgery, oncology, and radiation oncology.
    • Vigilance for recurrent bleeding is crucial, especially in cases with multiple dural metastases.
