Summary

Support groups for metastatic breast cancer patients show clear psychological benefits. However, evidence for improved survival outcomes from these support groups is not convincing, despite initial suggestions.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Psychosocial Oncology
  • Clinical Trials

Background:

  • Metastatic breast cancer (MBC) patients often experience significant psychosocial distress.
  • Support groups are a common intervention aiming to improve quality of life and potentially survival.
  • Early research suggested survival benefits, prompting further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the evidence from randomized trials on the effectiveness of support groups for patients with metastatic breast cancer.
  • To evaluate both the psychosocial and survival outcomes associated with these interventions.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic review of published randomized controlled trials (RCTs) investigating support groups for MBC patients.
  • Analysis of reported psychosocial outcomes (e.g., mood, distress) and survival data.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • All five reviewed studies reported positive psychosocial effects, though these were sometimes transient or inconsistent.
  • Only one study (Spiegel et al.) reported a statistically significant survival benefit.
  • Three other studies reporting survival data found no significant survival advantage for support group participation.

Conclusions:

  • Support groups are effective in improving psychosocial outcomes for patients with metastatic breast cancer.
  • Current evidence does not convincingly demonstrate a survival benefit associated with participation in support groups for MBC.
