Non-structural best management practices (BMPs) for stormwater management showed significant reductions in copper (77%) and PAH (50%) but did not meet environmental goals. Additional structural measures are needed for sufficient pollution reduction.

Area of Science:

  • Environmental Engineering
  • Urban Hydrology
  • Water Quality Management

Background:

  • Stormwater runoff in urban areas is a major source of pollution.
  • Non-structural Best Management Practices (BMPs) are increasingly considered for pollution control.
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of these practices is crucial for water quality improvement.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To model and evaluate the efficiency of non-structural BMPs for stormwater management.
  • To assess the impact of source reduction practices on urban catchment pollution.
  • To determine if current non-structural BMPs can meet environmental quality criteria.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized the substance flow model SEWSYS for simulation.
  • Modeled an urban catchment in Göteborg, Sweden.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Simulated a hypothetical control program including prevention, education, and regulations.
  • Main Results:

    • Achieved 77% reduction in copper and 50% reduction in Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH).
    • Copper reduction attributed to less roof corrosion and brake wear.
    • PAH reduction primarily linked to reduced road wear.

    Conclusions:

    • Non-structural BMPs alone were insufficient to meet desired environmental quality criteria.
    • A combination of non-structural and structural measures is recommended for effective pollution reduction.
    • Further implementation of integrated BMP strategies is necessary for improved stormwater quality.
