    Nurses administer fewer Diphtheria and Tetanus Toxoids and Pertussis (DPT) injections in the recommended anterolateral thigh site than optimal. This study found only 84.65% of DPT vaccinations were given correctly, below the 94.06% target.

    Background:

    • The anterolateral thigh is the recommended site for Diphtheria and Tetanus Toxoids and Pertussis (DPT) injections in infants.
    • Ensuring correct injection site administration is crucial for vaccine efficacy and safety.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine the injection site used by nurses for DPT administration in infants under 7 months.
    • To assess the adherence to recommended DPT injection site guidelines.

    Main Methods:

    • A questionnaire was distributed to nurses administering DPT injections in 26 healthcare agencies.
    • Data on injection site usage and frequency were collected and analyzed.

    Main Results:

    • Eighty-seven percent of 1,453 monthly DPT injections were administered in the anterolateral thigh.
    • The overall estimated proportion of DPT injections at the recommended site was 84.65%, significantly lower than the critical value of 94.06% (p < .00001).
    • Other sites used included the deltoid (3.6%), dorsal gluteal (5.1%), and ventrogluteal (4%).

    Conclusions:

    • Current DPT injection practices in the studied metropolitan area show suboptimal adherence to the recommended anterolateral thigh site.
    • There is a need for improved education and protocols to ensure correct DPT administration in infants.
    • Addressing these deviations may enhance vaccine safety and effectiveness.
