Summary

Imported infectious diseases in Denmark are generally contained, with limited spread to the general population. However, imported hepatitis A in children and drug-resistant bacteria pose risks to public health and hospital hygiene.

Area of Science:

  • Infectious disease epidemiology
  • Public health surveillance
  • Microbiology

Context:

  • Denmark experiences a significant proportion of notifiable diseases as imported cases.
  • Limited transmission of imported pathogens within the indigenous Danish population is observed.
  • Specific imported diseases like tuberculosis and hepatitis B are largely confined to immigrant communities.

Purpose:

  • To analyze the epidemiological patterns of imported notifiable diseases in Denmark.
  • To assess the extent of secondary transmission of imported pathogens within the Danish community.
  • To identify specific imported diseases that pose a risk to public health.

Summary:

  • Approximately one-third of notifiable diseases in Denmark are imported.
  • Imported Mycobacterium tuberculosis and chronic hepatitis B show limited spread beyond immigrant populations.
  • Imported hepatitis A in children and drug-resistant bacteria represent exceptions with potential for wider community outbreaks and hospital hygiene challenges.

Impact:

  • Highlights the importance of targeted surveillance for imported diseases.
  • Informs public health strategies for managing infectious disease risks in diverse populations.
  • Underscores the threat of antimicrobial resistance spread through imported bacterial strains.
