Medical negligence in Italy: the criminal inquiry

Abstract:
In the past decade, there has been an exponential increase in legal proceedings against doctors due to allegations of medical negligence. The via crucis of the doctor under investigation for alleged medical negligence in Italy is little known beyond the Alps. The authors hope this paper will bring to the attention of medical and legal colleagues this complex issue of the process followed by the justice machinery in Italy where the criminal route in pursuit of justice is the norm.
