Background:

  • Existing research on cerebrovascular accident (CVA) and daily living activities is inconsistent regarding gender, age, and lesion side effects.
  • Limited understanding of how demographic factors and stroke laterality influence functional recovery.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if gender, age, and lesion side impact the ability of individuals with CVA to perform activities of daily living (ADL).
  • To clarify the relationship between stroke characteristics and functional ADL performance.

Main Methods:

  • A large-scale descriptive study analyzed data from 3878 individuals with right or left CVA from the Assessment of Motor and Process Skills (AMPS) database.
  • Statistical analysis was employed to compare ADL performance across different demographic and stroke-related groups.

Main Results:

  • While statistically significant differences in ADL ability were observed based on gender, age, and CVA side, these were not clinically significant for gender and side of CVA.
  • Advanced age correlated with a progressive decrease in ADL capabilities.
