Area of Science:

  • Reproductive Endocrinology
  • Obstetrics and Gynecology

Background:

  • Progesterone is crucial for reproduction, but its use in pregnancy pathophysiology is debated.
  • Concerns exist regarding optimal administration methods for progesterone during pregnancy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the current applications and evidence for progesterone use in obstetrics.
  • To address controversies surrounding progesterone administration in pregnancy.

Main Methods:

  • Review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on progesterone use in obstetrics.
  • Analysis of progesterone's efficacy in various pregnancy complications.

Main Results:

  • Progesterone use is associated with reduced recurrent miscarriages before 34 weeks.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Progesterone treatment decreased the incidence of low birth weight and intraventricular hemorrhage in infants.
  • Evidence suggests efficacy in cases of immunological factors, luteal deficiencies, and hypercontractility.
  • Conclusions:

    • Progesterone demonstrates efficacy in managing specific pregnancy complications, potentially explaining reduced preterm birth rates in high-risk women.
    • Optimal progesterone dosage, route, and timing require further investigation for clinical recommendations.
