Velocardiofacial syndrome (VCFS) is linked to difficulties with arithmetic. This study found that white matter abnormalities in specific brain regions correlate with lower math skills in individuals with VCFS.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between white matter pathway integrity and arithmetic abilities in individuals with VCFS.
  • To determine if structural abnormalities in white matter correlate with reduced mathematical skills.

  • Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was used to scan 19 individuals with VCFS (aged 7-19 years).
  • A voxel-based linear regression analysis correlated fractional anisotropy (FA) values with arithmetic scores (WISC/WAIS), controlling for IQ and age.
