Summary

Pre-injection of flurbiprofen effectively eliminates propofol injection pain. Administering flurbiprofen immediately before propofol anesthesia is the most effective method for reducing propofol injection pain.

Background:

  • Propofol injection pain is a common issue during anesthesia induction.
  • Previous methods to reduce propofol injection pain have not been fully successful.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the most effective method for decreasing propofol injection pain.
  • To compare the efficacy of lidocaine, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and altered solvents in reducing propofol injection pain.

Main Methods:

  • A total of 250 patients undergoing general anesthesia were divided into five groups.
  • Groups received either flurbiprofen, lidocaine, propofol in long-chain triglyceride (LCT) alone, or propofol in a medium-chain triglyceride (MCT)/LCT mixture.
  • Pain was assessed 10 and 20 seconds after propofol infusion.

  • The flurbiprofen group (50 mg i.v. immediately before propofol) reported zero pain.
  • The lidocaine and MCT/LCT groups showed significantly reduced pain compared to the LCT-alone group.
  • The flurbiprofen group administered 1 minute prior to propofol was less effective than immediate administration.

Conclusions:

  • Intravenous flurbiprofen 50 mg administered immediately before propofol injection completely eliminates propofol injection pain.
  • Flurbiprofen is more effective than lidocaine or altered solvents in preventing propofol injection pain.
  • Timing of flurbiprofen administration is critical for its efficacy in reducing propofol injection pain.
