Summary

Transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) can treat liver tumors but rarely causes fatal pulmonary embolism. This case highlights a renal cell carcinoma patient who recovered fully after this rare TACE complication.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Interventional Radiology
  • Pulmonology

Background:

  • Transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) is a standard treatment for metastatic hepatic tumors.
  • Common TACE complications include hepatic insufficiency, fever, and pain.
  • Pulmonary embolism is a rare but potentially fatal adverse event associated with TACE.

Observation:

  • A patient with renal cell carcinoma and liver metastases underwent TACE.
  • The patient subsequently developed a pulmonary embolism, a rarely documented complication.

Findings:

  • This case report details a pulmonary embolism occurring after TACE in a patient with metastatic renal cell carcinoma.
  • The patient received effective treatment for the pulmonary embolism.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Highlights the importance of recognizing and managing rare complications like pulmonary embolism after TACE.
  • Emphasizes the need for vigilance in patients undergoing TACE, particularly those with significant comorbidities.
  • Suggests that prompt and effective treatment can lead to favorable outcomes even in rare adverse events.
