    Area of Science:

    • Reproductive Medicine
    • Pharmacology
    • Adolescent Health

    Background:

    • Dysmenorrhea, or painful menstruation, is a common and significant issue affecting adolescents.
    • Standard treatments include analgesics and prostaglandin inhibitors, but some patients exhibit refractory symptoms.
    • Investigating novel therapeutic agents is crucial for managing severe and treatment-resistant cases.

    Observation:

    • A case study focused on an adolescent female experiencing severe dysmenorrhea.
    • The patient's condition was refractory to conventional medical management.
    • Nicardipine, a calcium channel blocker, was administered to address the severe menstrual cramping.

    Findings:

    • The adolescent patient experienced excellent resolution of menstrual cramping.
    • Treatment with nicardipine did not result in serious adverse side effects.
    • Calcium channel blockers demonstrate potential efficacy in managing refractory dysmenorrhea.

    Implications:

    • Calcium channel blockers may represent a viable alternative treatment for severe dysmenorrhea in adolescents.
    • Further clinical studies are warranted to confirm the safety and efficacy of calcium channel blockers for refractory dysmenorrhea.
    • This approach could offer a new management strategy for adolescents with difficult-to-treat menstrual pain.
