Summary

Statins, or 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme-A reductase inhibitors, may improve outcomes for heart failure patients. Early studies show reduced mortality, but larger trials are needed to confirm these benefits.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Statins (3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme-A reductase inhibitors) are established cardiovascular disease treatments.
  • Evidence suggests potential benefits and harms of statins in heart failure patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the therapeutic properties of statins for heart failure.
  • To examine theoretical adverse effects of statin therapy in heart failure.

Main Methods:

  • Review of nonrandomized clinical studies on statin use and mortality in heart failure.
  • Summary of ongoing large-scale randomized trials.

Main Results:

  • Nonrandomized studies associate statin use with reduced overall mortality in heart failure.
  • Theoretical adverse effects of statins in heart failure have not been substantiated in smaller trials.

Related Experiment Videos

Conclusions:

  • Statin therapy may improve outcomes in ischemic and nonischemic cardiomyopathy, independent of cholesterol reduction.
  • Larger randomized trials are necessary to validate the role of statins in heart failure treatment.
