Capsule endoscopy (CE) is a safe and effective tool for diagnosing obscure gastrointestinal bleeding. This study found CE identified the cause of bleeding in over half of patients, improving treatment outcomes.
Area of Science:
- Gastroenterology
- Medical Imaging
- Diagnostic Endoscopy
Background:
- Capsule endoscopy (CE) is increasingly used for small bowel lesions.
- Obscure gastrointestinal bleeding is the primary indication for CE.
- This study evaluated CE's safety and diagnostic value in obscure GI bleeding.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess the diagnostic yield of capsule endoscopy.
- To determine the safety profile of capsule endoscopy.
- To evaluate capsule endoscopy in patients with obscure gastrointestinal bleeding.
Main Methods:
- 35 patients with obscure GI bleeding underwent capsule endoscopy.
- Eligibility required negative panendoscopy and colonoscopy.
- M2A video capsule endoscope was used; bowel preparation was selective.
Main Results:
- Abnormal findings in 89% of patients; 57.2% had explained pathology.
- Angiodysplasia (37%) and Crohn's disease (14%) were common causes.
- CE was safe with no side effects noted up to 2 months post-ingestion.
Conclusions:
- Capsule endoscopy is safe, painless, and effective for obscure GI bleeding.
- CE reached a final diagnosis in over half of patients, impacting treatment.
- CE provides clear images without bowel preparation, aiding early management.
