Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Toxicology

Background:

  • Argyria is a rare condition characterized by blue-gray skin discoloration.
  • Historically, silver-containing medications were used for various ailments.

Observation:

  • A 79-year-old woman presented with chronic grey-blue discoloration on light-exposed skin areas including face, forearms, and hands.
  • Fingernail discoloration was noted, but toenails were unaffected.

Findings:

  • The patient reported a history of oral therapy with Gastrarctin, a silver-containing drug, in 1959.
  • High silver tissue levels in affected skin confirmed the diagnosis of argyria.

Implications:

  • Argyria cases have declined due to the discontinuation of silver-based drugs.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Improved occupational safety measures for silver salt exposure have also contributed to its rarity.
