Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Sleep Medicine
  • Grief Research

Background:

  • Complicated grief (CG) is a debilitating condition affecting many adults.
  • Sleep disturbances are frequently reported in individuals experiencing grief.
  • The impact of comorbid conditions on sleep in CG requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the severity of sleep disturbances in adults with complicated grief.
  • To examine the influence of comorbid depression and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) on sleep quality in CG.
  • To explore the relationship between sleep quality and complicated grief.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 105 adults meeting criteria for complicated grief was recruited.
  • The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was administered to all participants.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Statistical analysis was used to compare sleep quality across different diagnostic groups.
  • Main Results:

    • The overall sample reported poor sleep quality, with a mean global PSQI score of 9.44.
    • Comorbid depression was associated with significantly worse sleep quality in individuals with CG.
    • Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) did not show a significant association with worsened sleep quality in this cohort.

    Conclusions:

    • Poor sleep quality is prevalent in individuals with complicated grief.
    • Comorbid depression exacerbates sleep disturbances in complicated grief.
    • Sleep quality may represent a modifiable risk factor for complicated grief, warranting further research.
