Summary

Scabies infestation can worsen Darier's disease, a rare genetic skin disorder. Treating the underlying scabies led to significant symptom improvement in a patient with Darier's disease.

Aggressive squamous cell carcinomas arising from mucosal lichen planus: A report of three cases.

Background:

  • Darier's disease is a rare genetic disorder of keratinization.
  • Scabies is a contagious infestation of the skin by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei.

Observation:

  • A 44-year-old man with Darier's disease experienced severe, persistent pruritus unresponsive to standard treatments.
  • Histopathological analysis confirmed Darier's disease and revealed arthropod fragments in the epidermis.
  • The patient's symptoms were refractory to typical Darier's disease therapies.

Findings:

  • An underlying, undetected scabies infestation was identified as the trigger for the patient's refractory symptoms.
  • Combined treatment with systemic ivermectin, topical allethrin, acitretin, and PUVA-bath therapy was initiated.
