Survivin expression in gangliogliomas, rare brain tumors, may predict a worse prognosis. This protein, linked to cancer cell survival, was found more frequently in aggressive or recurring tumors, suggesting its potential as a negative prognostic marker.

Background:
- Gangliogliomas are rare central nervous system (CNS) tumors primarily affecting children and young adults, often causing drug-resistant epilepsy.
- While typically well-differentiated with a favorable prognosis, some gangliogliomas can recur or progress to anaplastic, high-grade tumors with a poor outlook.
- Histopathological features alone do not reliably predict clinical outcomes, necessitating the identification of robust prognostic factors.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the expression of survivin, an anti-apoptotic protein, in gangliogliomas.
- To determine if survivin expression correlates with tumor grade, recurrence, or clinical prognosis in gangliogliomas.

- Immunohistochemistry was used to assess survivin expression in 15 ganglioglioma samples.
- Tumor samples included 10 low-grade and 5 high-grade neoplasms.
- Survivin expression was quantified and correlated with tumor characteristics and clinical history, including recurrence.
