Summary

Glaucoma doctors accurately predict patient treatment patterns but show gaps in understanding patient attitudes towards glaucoma management. Further research is needed to bridge these knowledge gaps for better patient care.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Patient-Doctor Relationship
  • Health Psychology

Background:

  • Doctor-patient expectations significantly influence interactions, yet glaucoma specialists' understanding of patient attitudes and behaviors is poorly understood.
  • Limited research exists on how well glaucoma specialists' expectations align with their patients' actual experiences and adherence to treatment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare glaucoma patients' self-reported experiences and opinions with their doctors' predictions of these responses.
  • To assess the accuracy of glaucoma specialists' knowledge regarding patient attitudes and treatment patterns in glaucoma management.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective study involving 128 glaucoma patients and 12 glaucoma specialists.
  • Patients completed questionnaires on glaucoma history, treatment, and opinions; doctors predicted patient responses.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Glaucoma specialists accurately predicted patient adherence to intraocular pressure (IOP) measurements, visual field testing, and topical medication use.
  • Discrepancies emerged regarding patient experiences with post-surgery discomfort and the impact of stress/environmental factors on IOP.
  • Significant variation in predictions was noted for patient self-reported 100% adherence to glaucoma medication.

Conclusions:

  • Glaucoma specialists demonstrate good awareness of patient treatment routines and adherence patterns.
  • Further investigation is warranted into glaucoma specialists' understanding of patients' subjective attitudes towards glaucoma, as significant differences were observed.
