[Pleural endometriosis: an unusual presentation].

Summary

Pleural endometriosis is a rare cause of chronic pleural effusions in women. Diagnosis requires considering this possibility and utilizing immunohistochemistry for confirmation.

Background:

Chronic exudative pleural effusions stem from various conditions.
Pleural endometriosis, a rare cause, presents as unilateral effusion with pleural thickening.

Observation:

A case of a 30-year-old African woman with chronic pleural effusion is presented.
Diagnosis of pleural endometriosis was established post-pleuro-pulmonary decortication.

Findings:

Immunohistochemistry confirmed pleural endometriosis.
Characteristic findings include endometrial glands or chorionic cells in the pleura.

Implications:

Pleural endometriosis should be considered in women with unexplained pleural effusions.
