Summary

Children with mixed or non-right-sided functions had significantly more right-sided crossbites in their primary teeth compared to true right-sided children. This highlights the influence of laterality on dental occlusion development.

Background:

  • Unilateral crossbite is a common malocclusion in primary dentition.
  • Laterality, or the preference for using one side of the body (hand, foot, eye), is established early in development.
  • The relationship between established laterality and malocclusion prevalence requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence of unilateral crossbite malocclusion in primary dentition.
  • To compare crossbite prevalence between children with true right-sided functions and those with non-right-sided functions (mixed or left-sided).

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study of 1,835 young African American and Caucasian children (mean age 8.5 years).
  • Dental casts were used to determine the transversal relationship of primary teeth.

    • Unilateral crossbite was observed in 140 children.
    • True right-sided children exhibited more symmetric occlusions and less right-sided crossbite than non-right-sided children.

    • Findings suggest a link between neurocranial asymmetry, cranial base, and occlusal structures.
    • Variable unilateral compensatory growth may occur post-fetal asymmetry.
    • Early lateralized functions and oral habits appear to modify growth patterns and influence malocclusion development.
