Acute myocardial infarction in the young
Insights
Coronary heart disease (CHD) is increasing in young adults under 40. Prevention strategies are crucial to reduce premature deaths, as risk factors are prevalent despite low mortality rates in this group.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Public Health
Background:
- Coronary heart disease (CHD) typically affects older populations.
- There is a concerning increase in CHD cases among younger individuals.
- Understanding risk factors and outcomes in this demographic is vital.
Purpose of the Study:
- To analyze the trend of CHD admissions in patients under 40 years old.
- To identify key characteristics, risk factors, and outcomes in this patient group.
- To emphasize the importance of preventive measures for premature CHD mortality.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective analysis of coronary care unit (CCU) admissions over two years.
- Inclusion criteria: patients under 40 years old admitted with suspected or confirmed CHD.
- Data collection focused on prevalence of risk factors, arrhythmias, and mortality rates.
Main Results:
- 38 patients under 40 were admitted to the CCU within two years.
- A rising trend in admissions for this age group was observed.
- High prevalence of CHD risk factors, low frequency of arrhythmias, and low mortality rate were noted.
Conclusions:
- The increasing incidence of CHD in individuals under 40 requires further investigation.
- Psychological and physical stress may play a significant role in the pathogenesis of CHD in younger populations.
- Substantial reduction in premature CHD deaths hinges on effective prevention strategies.
Abstract:
In space of 2 years our CCU admitted 38 patients under 40 years and the trend seems to be on the increase. The high prevalence of risk factors, the low frequency of arrhythmias and the low mortality rate were notable features. The role of psychological and physical stress in the pathogenesis of cor H. D. deserve more attention. The fact remains that the only road to a substantial reduction in premature death from CHD must be in its prevention.

Atherosclerosis, the primary malefactor, orchestrates this dangerous condition. It manifests as the accumulation of fatty deposits, akin to insidious plaques, within arterial walls. As time elapses, these plaques metamorphose, hardening and narrowing...
