    Background:

    • Trapeziometacarpal (TM) joint arthritis is a common cause of hand pain and dysfunction.
    • Surgical intervention, including TM joint fusion, is considered for severe cases unresponsive to conservative treatment.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the long-term functional outcomes and radiographic results of trapeziometacarpal (TM) joint fusion.
    • To assess patient satisfaction and objective measures of hand function following TM joint fusion.

    Main Methods:

    • A retrospective review of 39 TM joint fusions in 37 patients over a 10-year period.
    • Fixation methods included pin (27) and staple (12), with all cases utilizing bone grafting.
    • Functional outcomes were assessed subjectively and objectively (grip/pinch strength, nine-hole peg test) at an average of 4 years post-surgery.

    • Five delayed unions and three nonunions were observed.
    • Subjective results were rated as excellent (11), good (7), fair (5), and poor (1).
    • Grip and pinch strength were symmetrical; dexterity was slightly improved on the treated side. Radiographic analysis showed significant reductions in motion (72% adduction/abduction, 61% flexion/extension).

    Conclusions:

    • Trapeziometacarpal (TM) joint fusion provides satisfactory functional outcomes and minimal subjective complaints, despite significant radiographic loss of motion.
    • The procedure effectively addresses pain and improves hand function for patients with advanced TM joint arthritis.
