Summary

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) can cause gastrointestinal issues. This case report details a rare instance of eosinophilic enteritis in an SLE patient, successfully treated with prednisone.

Background:

  • Gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms are frequently observed in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).
  • Eosinophilic enteritis, a rare condition of unknown etiology, has recently been identified as a potential manifestation of SLE.

Observation:

  • A 47-year-old female patient with a history of SLE presented with recurrent abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
  • Elevated eosinophil counts were noted in her blood work during symptomatic episodes.

Findings:

  • A small bowel biopsy confirmed eosinophilic enteritis by revealing eosinophil infiltration within the muscularis propria.
  • This represents the second reported case of eosinophilic enteritis associated with SLE.
