Transient hyperammonemia of the neonate (THAN) is a critical condition in premature infants. This case study details a near-term infant’s survival using continuous arteriovenous hemodiafiltration and supportive care.

Area of Science:

  • Neonatology
  • Pediatric Nephrology
  • Biochemistry

Background:

  • Neonatal hyperammonemia necessitates prompt, multidisciplinary intervention.
  • Transient hyperammonemia of the neonate (THAN) typically presents in premature infants and often has a better prognosis than urea cycle disorders.

Observation:

  • A near-term premature male infant presented with symptoms of hyperammonemia within 36 hours of birth.
  • The infant exhibited signs consistent with transient hyperammonemia of the neonate.

Findings:

  • The infant survived following treatment with continuous arteriovenous hemodiafiltration (CAVHD), nutritional support, and sodium benzoate.
  • Diagnosis was confirmed through laboratory testing.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • This case highlights the successful application of CAVHD in managing severe neonatal hyperammonemia.
  • Long-term neurodevelopmental follow-up is recommended for infants treated for hyperammonemia.
