Summary

Non-infectious hazards, particularly mis-transfusion events caused by human error, are the leading cause of transfusion complications. New technologies like barcode and radiofrequency systems can help reduce these transfusion errors and improve patient safety.

Area of Science:

  • Transfusion Medicine
  • Patient Safety Technology
  • Healthcare Informatics

Background:

  • Non-infectious hazards are the primary cause of transfusion-related morbidity and mortality globally.
  • Mis-transfusion events, stemming from human "lapse errors," are the most common serious transfusion hazard, occurring at approximately 1 in 14,000 transfusions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To highlight the critical role of technology in mitigating transfusion errors.
  • To identify key "error spots" in the transfusion process suitable for technological intervention.
  • To explore the potential of emerging technologies in enhancing transfusion safety.

Main Methods:

  • Review of existing and emerging technologies for transfusion safety, including barcode and radiofrequency identification (RFID) systems.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Analysis of "error spots" in the transfusion pathway, such as bedside checks and sample collection.
  • Discussion of the future application of information technology, including computerized physician order entry and decision support, for transfusion decisions.
  • Main Results:

    • Barcode technology is already in clinical use, with radiofrequency-based systems nearing implementation.
    • Most systems initiate error reduction by applying machine-readable data to patient wristbands.
    • Significant challenges remain in applying technology to the decision-making process for transfusions.

    Conclusions:

    • Technological innovations, particularly barcode and RFID, show promise in reducing transfusion errors caused by human lapse.
    • Further research is needed to validate which technologies demonstrably improve patient outcomes.
    • Adoption of new technologies by healthcare professionals, administrators, and regulators is crucial for enhancing patient safety in transfusions.
