Summary

Thoracoscopic sympathicotomy for hyperhidrosis can cause a new side effect: extremity cold sensitivity. This previously unreported complication affects the arm and hand on the side of the surgery, leading to numbness and discomfort in cold conditions.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Cardiovascular Surgery

Background:

  • Thoracoscopic sympathicotomy is a surgical procedure to treat hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating).
  • The procedure involves interrupting sympathetic nerves that control sweating and blood vessel function.

Observation:

  • A young male patient developed cold sensitivity in his right hand and arm after undergoing thoracoscopic sympathicotomy for hyperhidrosis.
  • The affected extremity exhibited numbness and significant skin temperature drop upon cold exposure.

Findings:

  • Extremity cold sensitivity is identified as a novel, previously unreported side effect of thoracoscopic sympathicotomy.
  • The cold sensitivity was localized to the sympathicotomized limb, with the contralateral limb unaffected.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • This finding highlights a potential complication of thoracoscopic sympathicotomy that requires consideration in patient counseling and post-operative management.
  • Further research may be needed to understand the mechanism and prevalence of this side effect.
